Comments for installation errors

Testing feedback and ideas welcome here ! Here are some suggestions to try with installation:
1. these applications have been compiled for Series 60 platform devices that support Java Mobile Edition MIDP 2.0 and the JSR-179 API. For Nokia devices you can check support here.
2. One reason can be because these applications are not "signed" so the settings in your Nokia device Application Manager must be set to allow "all". If these settings are not shown in your device then your device software may not allow installation of UTM data and UTM converter
3. Uninstall all previous installations of UTM data and UTM converter, before trying a new install
4. "Invalid JAR" Some folks have found the UTM converter application is described as invalid during installation. Try uninstalling earlier versions first.
5. Once the application is installed use the Application Manager to open the security settings for the application to ensure Positioning, Landmarks, Read user data and Edit user data are all allowed
6. If you see an error such as "NoClassDef .. FoundError .. QualifiedCoodinates" then your device does not support Java technology JSR-179 API. Unfortunately these applications will not work in your device.

Hi Guy,

I love your tool!

would it be possible to add conversion from the following format as well? this format is used for geocaching - I would need to convert it to Decimal format for input in Nokia maps. at home I can use many online tools but I need something mobile.

DDD MM.MMM

I like to ask why the bearing in the circle screen always show 92 deg as heading ?

Correction to my last post
The program work fine, I do not advice that I can choice a mark and then Follow it. The circle track the bearing and distance very well.

Your program make my N95 into a Garmin GPS

Many thanks

Very well done! Thanks. Maybe this is beyond the feature set but I'd love to be able to enter two locations in any of the supported formats and calculate the distance between them.

Hello, I have a problem with loading my map image. When I select "Options>Load map file" it does nothing, then I select "clear map file" -- nothing, then I select "load map file" again and then it asks "Allow application UTM data to read user data?" -- I select "YES" -- nothing happens! The WORLD map is always on the screen. I have put my files into the phone memory /Images/Maps folder and also on the memory card, but I cant get it to work, any sugestions???
Thanks in forward

Hi Priit - try the latest version! I tested your files with the Nokia emulator and with a Nokia E90, and in both cases the Tallinn map worked first time for me. I sent screen shots of the Tallinn map display to your email. Good luck.

hi Priit, 1) is your E51 connected to a GPS device? 2) are the current displayed GPS coordinates within your map? ... The map list will only shows maps covering the current GPS location (reason: you can't plot a location on a map if you are not within the area covered by that map) Cheers, Guy

Thanks Guy. I look forward to the fullscreen support. Here's a bug report:

Hi Esdee, I wasn't able to reproduce this bug in a friend's N82 device here, no rebooting and selected landmark showed on the map and coordinate views ... perhaps the devices have different software, or the landmark store data is somehow corrupted? Hard for me to say. Good luck, Guy

Hi Guy,

Hello

Many thanks for your utility. It has finally allowed me to understand why I end up in a completely different place when entering "the same" co-ordinates as others do into my N95.

My suggestion is for something less detailed (a lite version perhaps?) that simply allows you to enter degrees, minutes seconds coordinates into the app and have the N95 notation created and saved as a landmark all from the first page!
Regardless of this, thank you very much for the app as it is!

This is a really nice program!
A few remarks: if you click to start UTM-data twice (because the first time seems nothing to happen) my phone hangs. So click once!

It would be nice if there could be ad a function to store youre trail, and export it to google maps or to see the trail again on your phone. (When you exit it is deleted?!)

You could easy make card yourself with google maps/earth especially the Terrain View!

You could use this program beside TomTom, very handy!

I've made my own cards, it's confusing that there's not already a map images/maps.

Maybe you could make a manual to make card yourself, or how to do this quickly.
posted by Blogger Laurus : 28 May 2008 at 06:18

It would also be nice to zoom in/out on your cards.

Do you know how it's possible to run TomTom and Nokia Sport Tracker at the same time while both are using the gps? Now always one can use it.

With UTM-data this is never a problem.

Hi Kai - I haven't tried using Sony-Ericsson handset. Does UTM data work - are GPS coordinates displayed? If so, which model are you using? If there is a file explorer, I would try in the root directory creating a folder Images, and a sub-folder Maps, then store the map images there. Good luck!

Neil - try the new UTM converter. Less detailed converter tool and more efficient than UTM data

Laurus -

1) the bug is still there regarding pressing quickly when opening. I can't find the cause

2) regards using Google Maps as map images, I've found it's hard to get the precise border coordinates from Google. It is possible to download a map, but the border coordinates are not specified, and anyway doing this in a mobile application infringes their copyrights... You're better off using their Google Maps S60 application :)
openstreetmap.org has better suupport for border coordinates (see blog post)

3) regards KML, I'll see how to do that in a future build.

4) see blog download post for link for the manual for creating map images/cards - it is pretty tedious work for sure! As I haven't (yet) seen alternative for S60 device map support for French Alps, I'll probably perserve.

Marcus - try the new UTM converter for dd.mmm and d-m-s conversions. There is a bug in UTM data for coordinates South of Equator or just West of Greenwich meridian e.g.: when converting -0.xyz degrees. In Scandinavia this bug wouldn't be noticed. This will be fixed in next UTM data release.

Really nice tool!! Thanks for making it available for free!!!

by the way:Would it be possible to include an export option for the landmarks in a later version, so that the landmarks can be written to memory as a file.

Exporting it the regular way (Landmarks -> send -> ...) is a bit inconvenient.

Tip: if you like to convert lmx-files to other formats use gpsbabel:

Hi Guy, I found your blog thru google looking for a free java application to drive a gps unit, i would like to use it as a sport trainer to measure my speed.
I downloaded the zipfile, extracted the files and installed the jar using nokia application installer.
When I launch the program i get the following error:

No Class Def Found Error
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError
javax/microedition/location/QualifiedCoordinates

I tried and tried, also by manual loading, but nothing seems to work.
Do you have any idea? I own a Nokia 6233 mobile phone.

Anyway, congratulations for your cool job!

Amos - probably your phone does not support Java technology feature called JSR-179 so these UTM applications will not work. Samsung SGH-G810 should work as it uses the Series 60 platform and has GPS built in. These applications have been created with a Series 60 development kit...

(Updated) Edoardo, your 6233 phone does not support a required Java technology feature called JSR-179 Location API
http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6233
Your 6233 is a Series 40 device: to date no Series 40 devices support JSR-179, but that may change in future S40 phone models.

Anyone with a Sony-Ericsson phone with JSR 179 support - feel free to contact me. See this link and select "JSR", and check "Location(JSR-179)"

Hi Benjy
I do not have conversion code for Israeli Transverse Mercator. If you can write Java methods to convert from decimal WGS84 to Isreali (in both directions) same as

then I can try porting it. If you are interested you can contact me by gmail

I can't install it on my E90.
I start the installation process, progressbar goes up to 90%, then asks for access point (i have tried gsm / wifi), shows 3g traffic icon, waits for few seconds and then displays simple error: unable to install.
Same result when i try to install to phone memory or to memocry card.

The install logs on 14th June show an E90 in Finland(Elisa) using an Opera browser - you? Each time the error is "User cancelled". Weird.

Two weeks ago I installed to an E90 with software 300.34.84 (latest from Nokia software updater). Check device SW is up to date? Check the application manager settings allow "All" software installations?

The logs also say you have software 400.34.93 which I have not tested.

@Mihkel

Your settings are the same as mine.

I updated my E90 to 400.34.93 and installed UTM data using the browser link with no problems:

http://www.hostj2me.com/downloads/
1071/4337/UTM_data.jad

So I don't know what is the reason for this installation problem.

Are you having same problem when you install UTM converter?
posted by Blogger Guy Nicholson : 16 June 2009 at 13:00

Hi

UTM converter failed to install also.

I foramtted memory card and factory reseted the phone.

Restored only contacts etc. but not settings nor files.

Then installed UTM data and this time it worked.

Successfully installed this great application on a Nokia 6700 classic (that's right, Symbian S40). The only thing that is not working correctly is that if you select less 'coordinate settings' the font gets larger and goes beyond the resolution of my display. In other words: sentences are cut off.

Hello Guy,

Very nice proggie! I use it on a Nokia N79.

I have a few suggestions:

Settings page:

Go online at startup => I suppose you want to say: Start with phone boot (or something like that, in proper English)

Timeout alarm - what is that? Maybe a little help file would be nice (also for "Go online at startup")

--

Menu: There are two entries "Exit" in the main menu. One is enough ;=)

--

I would very much like to see an option where UTM sends its position via SMS automatically at regular intervals to a preset mobile number, provided the Nokia has moved a certain distance and/or a certain time has elapsed:

settable minimum distance to move before an SMS is sent: 50 meters - 500 meters - 1 km - 10 km - 100 km - or always sending, irrespective of travelled distance

Settable interval to send an SMS:

every 5-15-30-60 minutes
every 2-4-6-12-24 hours

--

And it would be very nice to have an option where another person can query the UTM with a special SMS text to retrieve the current position, speed and heading; it should be settable whether the UTM receives this data quietly or with a noticeable sound/vibration. PhoneBak does this but is otherwise rather buggy.

--

I'd be ready to pay let's say USD 25 for the interval sending and the remote querying.

Kind regards
Christoph

About font size - that's due to Java implementation in Nokia phone S40 OS, nothing I can do about it

@Christoph
Great suggestions!

Go online at startup => means "start GPS at UTM data program start"

Timeout alarm =>
means if you do nothing after timeout of 5 minutes there will be a warning sound, to let you know your battery is being used up by GPS usage. Crucial when hiking and you put your phone away not to flatten the battery.

I should write a help file...

Menu: There are two entries "Exit" in the main menu. One is enough ;=)
:) This is a Java implementation quirk. In some phones (E90 and N95) you will only see one "Exit" entry. If I take out the one I put in the code, then there is none. I haven't figured this out, but then I am just a hacker, not a pro!

I would very much like to see an option where UTM sends its position via SMS automatically at regular intervals to a preset mobile number, provided the Nokia has moved a certain distance and/or a certain time has elapsed

Great feature. The problem will be a user prompt to confirm every sent SMS. This is because my application is not signed, and I am too mean to pay 500usd(?) per year to buy that.

It's good to know you would pay for such a feature. But I have been honest about much of code is not my copyright and therefore I can not release a commercial version without paying licence fees. Again I just a part time hacker who was happy, and had time, to make a better app than what I found in my Nokia phone...

Cheers!
