Useful addition. Thanks.

Could you consider including an export to gpx/kml for the landmarks data?

Also why does it try to go online during the installation? I grabbed the jad and jar files via pc.

Esdee - good idea!

It goes online during installation to send an install notification (few bytes of data) to www.hostj2me.com so that the number of installations is tracked

Glad to hear that you'll add the conversions.

One more thing, could you make this app also aware of the user-created maps?

Thanks again for your work.

This app is almost exactly what I have been looking for! All I needed to change was to add different grids (coordinate systems).
I would be willing to expand the code to also include the Swiss topographic grid CH1903. The formulae are all documented by
Swisstopo. Would you tell me what exactly is needed? I believe others might benefit of such an effort as well. Thank you for *your* efforts!
Sincerely,
Stefan Mueller, Switerland

For some reason the hyperlink of my previous post got lost. The documentation on the formulae can be found at

Stefan: The conversion seems straightforward. Is this grid system CH1903 used on topographic maps of the Swiss Alps?
posted by Blogger Guy Nicholson : 15 July 2008 at 16:16

Guy,
Indeed, the conversions are all laid-out. The CH1903 grid is the one used on all Swiss maps. It uses a 1 kilometer base length which makes it very easy to read for everyday purposes. Have a look at www.mapplus.ch and you will recognize the rectilinear grid.

Since I do a lot of mountaineering, I would be very happy if I had an application at hand which would allow the use of my Nokia N95 as a GPS in the Swiss alps.

Cheers!
Stefan

Since you've altered the maps location in the most recent UTM data beta, could you do the same on the converter too so I can avoid keeping duplicates?

Come to think of it, why not consolidate the two apps into one UTM Tools package instead?

Thanks again

Esdee - latest releases of UTM data and UTM converter both use the same map folder location in the device: the default photos folder. If you have a Nokia device, this change should have no impact to map storage (Images/Maps). If you have Sony-Ericsson device you may now be able to use maps stored in the device for the first time. Someone can comment on that. Guy

Again, this app is out of this world! Thanks!

I was wondering if you ever considered adding another tab that allowed various speed alarms to be set. I know, I have a use for it! I pass through various speed limited areas, 60km/h,80km/h,100km/h and 120km/h on my way to work. To be able to set 4 or 5 settings and have one of them being the active one would prevent many speeding fines!

Great little app... very useful for OS map co-ords.

One feature that would be great would be allowing the position data to be SMS'd or maybe allow the whole position info screen to be copied so you could paste into an SMS.

cheers

Simon: sms sending will be in next release.

Hi,

thanks for these tools, they make the GPS in my Nokia from useless to usable.

Two suggestions:
1. It would be great if you could integrate the features of UTM converter into UTM data. I hate having to enter the coordinates in the converter, then saving as a landmark, then loading it in UTM data.

2. Waypoint projections would be great (current waypoint + distance in a direction of xyz degress relative to north = new waypoint). This is sometimes needed for geocaching.

Thanks a lot!

re: two suggestions

1. try the Convert option in UTM data (provides the same conversion functions as in UTM converter).

The only thing I believe missing from UTM data is the ability in UTM converter to read geotagged image coordinates. I haven't bothered as a) code bloat, b) it's pretty horrible user experience due to all the device security prompts that happen when opening folders

2. I'll see if this can be done easily or not.

Thanks for the feedback.

As a landscape photographer I was looking for an application that would run on my E51 mobile and could calculate sunrise and sunset times based on my current location. UTMDATA does excatly what I need. Thanks!

Here are couple more suggestions:
- calculate low and high tides
- current moon phase, next full or new moon
- current azimuth (as text labels) for moon and sun

Hi Yekorzh - thanks for the ideas

Try Dana Peters' compass software which will do everything you need, except for tides. It doesn't need GPS so will suit your Nokia E51.

Hi.

Is it possible to use this application to post the coordinates to a URL using GET... e.g. every 45 seconds so the application sends a URL to the webserver e.g. http://mydomain.com/gpsinput.php?longitude=xxxxxxx&latitude=yyyyyyy ?

Could be quite useful for tracking my position and allowing friends and family to find me.

Many Thanks

Rob,

many other applications, like Nokia Sportstracker, are posting GPS data to the internet as you describe.

It's technically possible to do this with UTM data, but every 45 seconds there will be a security prompt for the user to accept .... so it will not be usable. This is because UTM data is not a "Java verified application", which requires $$$ to do. At the moment I have no plan to pay for that.

=> suggest you try Nokia Sportstracker application and web site.

cheers, Guy

I just wanted to say thanks for such a great application! It helped get us safely up and over Ben Macdui a couple of weeks ago when the conditions went bad. While we were never far from where we wanted to be, having this app to double check our location helped us out no end.

Hi and thanks for this great app. I have one little problem though: On my Nokia E71 with a German keyboard I can not enter a decimal "." when entering coordinates. Neither the "." button nor the "," button will create this symbol. Would be great if it were possible to fix this. Thanks!

E71 German keyboard issue with '.' I'm guessing this can't be fixed in my app: the text field user interface and keyboard use the Nokia E71 device java methods, not my code. So just should check E71 software is up to date (and hope that works). I tested with an E71 with English keyboard and that works okay.

Suggestion - try pressing * and hold. On a regular phone keypad that brings a pop-up box with '-' and '.' characters

Hi Guy,

I trying playing around with your code ( I'm not really into Java ,more of a real-time (DSP) person...)not with any success.
BUT , I did fing the UTM parameters for Israel that are an off-set from the UTM WGS84 :
IDX = 104
DA = -163.789
DF = -5.4739085E-5
DX = -235
DY = -85
DZ = 264

I'm not sure how they correspond to your parameters like ds,rx,ry,rz
Or how to add the to the Java.
what is your gmail?

Fantastic app! Just what I was looking for. Works on a Nokia 6210 Navigator.
My only issue is - when I exit the app, the gps does not turn off. When I open and close nokia maps the gps turns off, but after running this I can not get the gps to turn off without turning off the phone.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks a lot for this application!

Would it be possible to add the feature "lock keypad"?

I have also a question. I use the format "UTM map 1:25000" for IGN french card. The coordinate looks like this : X Ymm. How many "Y" makes one "X"? Like 60 minutes make 1 degree. I hope my question is clear.

Thanks a lot!
posted by Anonymous Anonymous : 23 March 2009 at 19:39

Salut Jerome.
IGN 1:25000 maps are 1cm=250m, and IGN map UTM grid lines (which are 1km square) are 40mm apart. So 40 (Y mm) makes 1 (X km).
Key lock is a good idea, but I don't know if possible. I'll take a look.
Ciao, Guy

That's exactly the app I'm searching.
BUT my phone only supports apps up to 128kB :-(
Any chance to have a lean version which only shows the coordinates? I don't need the map etc.
(Or which part uses up that much space?)

would it be possible to add a time stamp to each co ord logged in the kml file?
posted by Anonymous phil : 29 May 2009 at 04:40

for Phil: KML specs allow a time stamp for single points, but not for each individual coordinate in the trail. No can do.

for Stephan: sorry, don't have time to do "lean version" right now. maybe in future. I could email you an old smaller version if you want. btw what phone do you have? probably it does not support GPS/JSR-179 with that amount of memory...

Just downloaded this and wish I had discovered it before - superb piece of software. No need for separate GPS device as can now do everything on my nokia e71. I was wondering if possible to add a conversion to UK postcode - so I can link an os coordinates to create a postcode for sat nav thanks

@David. Good suggestion for a postcode translator. Unfortunately I don't know of a simple code solution that I know. I read somewhere you can do that in www.streetmap.co.uk
posted by Blogger Guy Nicholson : 14 July 2009 at 15:41

Street map converter is useful, but nearby.org.uk seems to have more technical info about coordinate conversion, which perhaps might be possible to use with your great UTM program- see http://www.nearby.org.uk/api/convert-help.php

@david. Thanks for the link: "UK postcodes in this service are only SECTOR postcodes, that is the last two letters are ignored (but its recommended you still provide them), and so the accuracy is only about 2km" => I don't believe this accuracy justifies the work needed.

Hi I really appreciate this software. It got me out of a pickle converting DMM to DD. I also love the moon and sun position and other data. The feature I thought would be great is the proximity alarm, but for me it comes on too far away. An awesome improvement for this would be for the proximity alarm beeps to be configurable in term of when it starts, but for the beeps to get more frequent as you get closer. Thanks again for the great software.

Good suggestion.

It would require a major architecture change to do a faster beep when you are closer to a location; at the moment it beeps every time a new GPS location is supplied by the phone hardware, so don't hold your breath!

Wonderful ap. Thank you.

In an ideal world I would have two items on my wish list. First to show the Ord Survey grid data by itself, but in BIGGER TYPE to make it more readable on my phone (without glasses). Secondly, I use a Garmin GPS at the moment and this records your track, allows you export this track as a GPX file at the end and better still, the track creates a breadcrumb trail which you can follow back to the start if you become lost. ie The compass shows you where the next waypoint is.

I have installed this on my new Nokia 6720 Classic. It looks good and does pretty much what I was looking for. However installing it seems to have an impact on the screen and camera. Nice app, very handy. How would I customise this for Australian use? Our maps are ALMOST UTM but not exactly, so the accuracy is slightly off. I don't mind doing the finger work to enter the appropriate constants but I don't know where to put them.

This is a fantastic app and I have it set as one of my most used shortcuts, so thanks very much for developing it.

But... can anyone help me with loading my own maps. I have followed the instructions closely but for the life of me I cannot get the app to recognise and display any maps other than one called 'world.png' with limits of -180,-90, 180, 90. This doesn't have to be the actual world map - I can make it display any 256 colour png image I want as long as it has the world title and mapdata.csv has the whole world coords associated with it...

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Are there any obvious tricks I am missing that will not allow UTMdata to make use of arbitrary.png with arbitrary limits?

I am running a Nokia 6220 classic with S60 rel3.2

Thanks for any help, John

Hi Guy, great app (using it with my Nokia 5800).

My one suggestion for improvement would be to have the option to present the OSGB data in larger type and with easting and northing seperated somehow. It can be hard to read the coordinates quickly with all the numbers bunched up.

So "NT4567853433" could instead be displayed as
"NT 45678 53433" (and in nice big type).

Cheers!

Just wanted to let readers of this page know that creating the Mapdata.csv file using Linux does not work. (Linux uses a different coding for the end of a line.)

It took me literally months to figure this out! I use Wine's Notepad under Linux to manipulate the file and all works fine.

Many thanks to Guy for this wonderful app! Still hoping to make it one day to the Alps together.

I've tried creating a Photo folder in both phone and card memory but still can't create the kml. Would be great to have a browsable directory specification for the output.

Hi,

I am the developer of the Jcoord and jSunTimes libraries which you have used as part of your UTM Data software. These libraries are licensed under the GPLv2 license and it is a requirement of this license that any software which modifies my libraries is also released under the terms of the same license. This would mean that UTM Data should be licensed as GPL v2 and source code should be available.

An alternative is that you can purchase an unlimited user license for Jcoord which will allow royalty-free distribution of the library and you wouldn't be bound to the terms of the GPLv2 license.

If you would like to contact me, then use e-mail address in the Licensing section of http://www.jstott.me.uk/jcoord/.

Kind regards,

In a slightly larger font then the current application allows.

UTM data is awesome! I use it on Nokia E63 + Holux GPSlim 236 (beginning tests for Nokia LD-3W, too).

I really value the astronomical information (Sun/Moon rise/set, next full/new)! I just hope UTM data didn't require GPS! It could use the phone date/time and the last true location to calculate the astronomical events.

I have tried making my own map for my home area, but nothing showed up. I assume I've made a mistake, so I need to go through the procedure again. It's so easy to shuffle the lat/lon coordinate elements. I just wish there was detailed info on the limitations of the map graphics (like does UTM data zoom the map or does it need to be screen-size always, how does it choose between overlapping maps etc).

My biggest problem is not UTM data related: I can only use one GPS tool at a time. If I use Sports-Tracker, I cannot use UTM data as compass. I wish there was a clever driver that shares the GPS port in S60. Google Maps / Latitude works on the background, because it does not reserve the GPS port all the time, and doesn't get upset if some other tool has reserved it (Google Maps just uses cell-tower based location then).

Again, HUGE thanks for awesome tool!
